About Us
The Historic Florida Militia (HFM) was formed in 1974 to provide 18th century interpretations for the American Bicentennial years. Two interpretive Living History units or "Companies" were formed and were involved in over 400 events throughout the ten years of commemorative ceremonies and battles. They equipped and clothed themselves, traveling over the Eastern seaboard at their own expense, and participating in these events. These Companies are still active today.
In 1977 the focus was expanded to interpret the Hispanic presence in Florida and units were formed for this purpose. Presentations included full encampments and tactical demonstrations involving hundreds of reenactors. These were still volunteer events that were eventually partially funded by city and county grants, allowing partial reimbursement for expenses. Many of the participants traveled as far as 500 miles to attend.
In 1983, 16th century units were formed as well and along with the other volunteer units participated at Museum openings, school and scout gatherings, and demonstrations for the general public. Events were planned and staged, such as the Landing of the Spanish in Florida, the attack on St. Augustine by Sir Francis Drake (the English Corsair), the Battle of Alligator Creek, Cannon and Black powder training sessions, and two Schools of the Soldier, one 16th century and the other 18th century. These gatherings usually comprised a weekend of encampments and demonstrations for the public. Research is conducted and shared through publications and meetings to ensure a high standard of authenticity .The effort is decidedly educational and evaluations by schools and individuals have been extremely complimentary. Expectations are high that this is a growing field in Education.
The HFM is a non-profit education group which promotes better understanding of our military and cultural history .The HFM was designated the Florida State Bicentennial Militia in.1976 and has since served as the State Governors' Historic Guard. Members of the HFM have volunteered and trained with the National Park Service interpreters in the safe use of black powder. We have members certified in both cannon and musket. Our safety record is perfect after 20 years of weapons demonstrations.
The recreated living history groups of the Historic Florida Militia include: Heritage of the Ancient Ones (Native American culture up through 1500's), Men of Menendez (1500-1600's), Drake's Men (1568), Tilden's Company of Prince Rupert's Regiment (1640), Crew of the Black Heart (1690-1720), Spanish Garrison (1740), 42nd Highland Rangers (1740), 6Oth Regiment of Foote-Royal Americans (1776), East Florida Rangers (1776), 3rd Florida Confederate States (1861), WWII Impression (1944).

Company News
Recently, the Historic Florida Militia, Inc. was approved for a grant from the Florida Secretary of State, Division of Historical Resources to publish the FLORIDA FRONTIER GAZETTE . It is now a publication of the Historical Florida Militia.
The FLORIDA FRONTIER GAZETTE is a unique publication with grass-roots support from our readers and the Florida community. After a 3-year hiatus, we feel that the time has come to start publishing the FLORIDA FRONTIER GAZETTE again. Our goal is to publish by the last weeks of August & November, 2004, and February & May, 2005.
While the grant provides the initial seed money to help get the Gazette get on its feet again, we will still need additional funding to keep it running. Though sponsorships and memberships we hope that the FLORIDA FRONTIER GAZETTE will continue to enrich our readers well into the future.
The FLORIDA FRONTIER GAZETTE will be changing its format from the old newspaper style to a magazine style format. It will have an updated look with a full color cover, that we hope will make it even more enticing to pick up nd read.
We strongly believe that the FLORIDA FRONTIER GAZETTE will continue survive only through community commitment. Here are some of the many opportunities for involvement by HFM members and others in the community:
