The East Florida Rangers (EFR) was formed in 1776 by order of the then governor of East Florida, Patrick Tonyn. The Rangers, based in St Augustine, were placed under the command of Lieut. Colonel Thomas Brown. The units mission was to protect the northeast Florida Province against the rebels north of the ST. Mary’s river. EFR fought in two major battles of the Revolutionary War, the battle of Thomas Creek and the battle of Savannah.

The Rangers were a mounted unit that sometimes fought as an augmentation to the 60 th Royal Americans of Foot, also based out of St Augustine. The men of the EFR were a rough group that fought on their own terms and could endure all sorts of conditions and hardships.
